20th May 2022
Sometimes in your working life, you will always remember an afternoon … Wednesday 18 May 2022 was such an afternoon.
On a lovely afternoon, we took the girls to play a very experienced and talented side with many of their players in representative pathways. A heavy defeat was a strong possibility with the girls being at a very early stage of their hardball development.
The girls batted first and faced some very quick bowling. They never took a backward step, never flinched and wore their bruises with pride and scored a very respectable 56 with everyone contributing.
When Handcross were put into bat, they showed enough respect to our girls by using their best players who had opened the bowling to bat first. Our score was always going to be low and Handcross consequently scored enough runs to win the game.
Girls, you competed to the very last ball. Miss Jones and myself are so proud of you. The biggest compliment made to anyone will always be by their own peers. The Handcross girls loved being in the field with you despite playing against their own team mates.
Girls, and I do not say this this lightly, it was one of the best afternoons of my cricket career. The way you supported each other, fielded for each other and encouraged each other was simply brilliant … you should feel very, very proud. It was an afternoon that was good for the soul – girls, thank you.
